Nanchang Grand Theatre
PES-Architects, 2021 — 2024

Nanchang Grand Theatre is located on the shores of lake Jiulong, some 15km south of the city center. The building is divided into three parts connected by a covered atrium. It houses a 1600-seat opera hall, a smaller 450-seat multipurpose hall, as well as a cultural center.
My role
I was in charge of refining the design of the opera hall. The wooden bands that make up the hall’s interior presented the biggest challenge. Each band was individually shaped by eye using Rhinoceros and adjusted with the help of acoustic engineers in order to optimize sound distribution throughout the hall.

I worked on the foyers, formalizing the sweeping geometry of the balconies and developing the circulation with the addition of spiral staircases.

Throughout the project I was also in charge of the voluminous design book, our principal means of communication with the client. This bilingual document was updated weekly and contained all the latest designs from our team.
